Wylde Green – Birmingham
The site was formed by the assembly of grounds occupied by five substantial detached houses. A new care home, designed by the practice, was incorporated onto the final third of the site and eleven 3 storey houses incorporated onto the remainder of the site accessed via a curvilinear spine road that ran centre site and linked to Penns Lane new site wide/landscaping integrated the development with its setting.
Each house, designed in a contemporary idiom and detailing but utilising traditional form and a unifying materials palette of clay tile, timber, render and extensive use of glass, occupied a generous plot. The care home designed to complement the aesthetic of the houses, provided good quality accommodation for older people within a carefully crafted large footprint building that integrated well with its surroundings. This was just one of a series of care homes in the Midlands designed by the practice.
